MODERN DENTISTRY
At Lavitt Animal Hospital, we strive to ensure your pet can maintain a healthy and comfortable mouth. A healthy mouth is important to maintain a healthy body!
Did you know that dental disease is one of the most common diseases affecting cats and dogs?
Did you know that it is just as important to be brushing your cat or dog’s teeth as it is to brush your own? Dogs and cats can develop a number of dental problems, including resorption, fractures, cancer…but one of the most common diseases we encounter is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease occurs as bacteria accumulate on the teeth (dental plaque) and eventually start to mineralize (dental calculus).
If you’re noticing bad breath in your pet, it’s a good idea to have our veterinarian take a look!
We include an oral exam in every wellness examination to help you keep on top of your pet’s oral health. We do not agree with recommendations that a pet should have their teeth cleaned routinely every year – some need more frequent cleanings, some less – our veterinarian can help you know when your pet would benefit from a dental cleaning. You will also receive advice from our veterinarian about tools to keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy between dental cleanings.
When your pet does need dental work done, some of the services we offer include:
- Dental scaling/polishing of the teeth – includes a full oral assessment
- Digital dental radiology (x-rays) – allows us to see changes and find disease hidden below the gumline
- Extraction(s) – only when needed!
- Gingival sculpting – if overgrown
- Biopsies – if signs of possible cancer are found
- Corrective soft-tissue surgery
